Ultimate Guide: What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session (So You Look Amazing + Feel Comfortable)
So many people ask: “What do we wear for photos?” You want them to feel like yourself, not like they’re in a fashion catalog. Here’s how I help you make confident choices that look beautiful, cohesive, and timeless in photos.
1) Start With Comfort
Wear things that reflect you. If you never wear dresses, don’t suddenly buy one. Photos are about you being you positive, not “picture perfect.” Jeans and boots? Great. Light dress? Also fab.
2) choose a colour palatte
Instead of matching outfits exactly, aim for 2–3 colours that work well together.
You’ll often hear advice to avoid neon colours, big logos or busy patterns, and that generally does photograph more timelessly. That said, if bold colours or patterns really feel like you, go for it. These photos are for you, not Instagram.
If you want a safe starting point, soft neutrals and warm earthy tones always photograph beautifully.
3) think about the location
Different locations can influence what works:
Wetlands → neutrals + soft layers
Bush trails or back paddock → boots + layers
Urban / textured backdrops → simple tones → focus on face
4) kids + layers
Kids often get cold or bored fast. Layers keep them comfortable and allow quick outfit swaps — and happy kids make better photos!
5) bonus tips
Avoid identical outfits
Coordinate but don’t uniform
Bring a spare outfit for kids
